Face

Madeleine McCann has a face. She has been abducted. She may be alive or dead. These are the terms by which she exists for us. Her face is known and we commiserate with its innocence. She is on all news channels, the internet and radio too. A photograph of her has been blessed by the Pope.

If only all children had faces. They don’t. Thousands are kidnapped or brutalized or sold into slavery. Millions die. Somewhere in Africa a faceless baby is found in a garbage dump wrapped in a Checkers packet. From far away its faceless, lifeless body looks like a doll. Aids and starvation have become tired now. The Pope hasn’t set foot on this continent in years.

It is a doll.

I definitely agree on this one.

This whole thing isn't anything more than media hype. As everyone else has stated, I also feel sorry for the family, but the way this is being treated is as if no child had ever been kidnapped. Let alone the tragic deaths of thousands of aids orphans, but who cares about those poor things lying in some third world corner. Unless they are white and middle to upper-class they might as well be invisible and have their bones crushed up to add to the bonemeal that the mccanns use in their newly made garden by home-front (this has not yet happened, but I wouldn't be surprised. I am sure Beckham would be glad to get his dainty fingers dirty)
The pope scenario on the other hand might as well come out of a family guy cartoon, where seconds after he kisses Madeline's photo, she appears from under his frock, hardly a coincidence ...
